Update: It’s called the “Oscars of street food.” And last night El Olomega won the Vendy’s top gong for best street food in New York City. Worth a trip to Red Hook.
Way back in 2012, we raved about the food at the Red Hook Food Vendors in Brooklyn where:
about 10 trucks lined the street selling fresh handmade tortillas, chiles rellenos, horchata, aguas refrescos…We decided to “graze,” so sampled sopes de puerco (above), huaraches de cesina, helote, fried plantains and pupusas, and lots of salsa.
We were right! El Olomega, because of their Salvadorean comfort food-crispy fresh pupusas- has been nominated for Vendy Cup Finalist. Yep, they’re in a select group of only five “street vendors in the running for best food of the year” in New York, according to Serious Eats. El Olomega, I’ll be rooting for you September 7!
